Things I’ve Done

Enno Krieger

Today we worked with Enno Krieger, a graphic designer from Hamburg, and did a little type workshop. We were given blank postcards and some magazines and we had to use type from the magazine to create a piece of type on the postcard. It was a really fun day and I ended up making four postcards…keen! At the end of the day we all stuck our postcards up on the wall and it looked really impressive, hopefully I’ll get a photo of this tomorrow if I remember my camera. For now, here’s mine…Type Postcards

Don’t ya just love my woodchip wallpaper?! These were a tad hard to photograph because of the glossy paper, but you get the gist. Any constructive criticism on these would be muchly appreciated as I would definitely like to make some more of these, cutting and pasting is so much fun!

Summer Project-Think of a Shop

Over the summer we were set a project to come up with a shop and design it, so I invented HIDE…a shop which sells things in just one colour. The shop changes location every 3 months and so does the colour scheme of the shop, the logo, carrier bags etc etc, simples!

(The red one is a bit of a brighter, nicer red but just doesn’t show up that great online)

Loads more photos on Flickr as usual!

About Me Project

I made this book for a project titled ‘About Me’…it’s a handmade book of all my favourite things. To present it to the class I used photos of it in a slide show and played ‘Merry Happy’ by Kate Nash in the background…one of my favourite songs! I know these photos are small, so if you’d like to see bigger ones visit my Flickr page.

Another classmate, Sara, handmade rubber stamps with words on to spell out sentences about herself…I got her to ‘tattoo’ some of these bad boys on my hands and I think they make great photos.

Studio Rules Project

I know my blog has been pretty quiet over the summer, but I’m back at Uni now and churning out the work so don’t forget to pop by from time to time as it will be regularly updated again…promise!

In the first week back at Uni we were given a short project on studio rules, we basically had to come up with some rules and show them any way we wanted. I made these tea stains (although I really should have used coffee, would’ve been darker!) and wrote random rules about tea inside them, I think if they were cut down they’d make really cool badges. On the subject of badge makers, I REALLY WANT ONE! I’m thinking of biting the bullet and investing in one but maybe I should wait until I have a job before blowing the rest of the overdraft…or I could sell badges!

Some pages from my sketchbook…

I’m back at home for the summer now and I’ve hardly posted anything since I’ve been back, partly because I’ve been working and partly because I just haven’t done that much! So, just so you guys know I’m still alive here are a few pages from the sketchbook I started this summer…

‘It just wasn’t their cup of tea’…

The Big Chocolate Tea Party Logos

Did a bit of work recently for a charity event called ‘The Big Chocolate Tea Party’.

I created a logo for the event and also a few pictures to be used for publicity for the event, unfortunately my designs weren’t used because, as Peer said…’It just wasn’t their cup of tea!’

A final color scheme for the logo (left) was never chosen, but my favourite has to be the beautiful blue one. If you’d like to see the logos at a bigger size check out my flickr page.

Below is a photo I thought could be used to promote the event…I carried on with the 3D text I’d done inĀ  the ‘Makeability Month’ and used chocolate biscuits to make it. It was so frustrating as they kept breaking, but I used the leftovers to make a lovely Belgian Biscuit Cake :) yum yum! Again, more photos on good ol’ flickr.

So, let me know what you guys think…as always your opinions are very, very welcome!

InDesign Spreads

For part of the first year computer workshops we had a project to design some double page spreads on InDesign experimenting with different styles for each one.

The subject of my spreads was illustration, although the text is only placeholder text.

Enjoy!

Pissing Off A Busker

Manifesto

Just finished working on our last brief for the first year! The brief was to write a six point manifesto for a busker which would ‘improve their lives’. So, we headed to Covent Garden where we spoke to a couple of lovely buskers and of course watched their performances, unluckily (for us and them) it wasn’t a very pleasant day so the whole street performance scene was fairly quite.

After much deliberating we decided to write a six point manifesto for the public on how to piss of a busker as a lot things seem to really annoy them! (I would just like to point out that this isn’t serious, I don’t truely wish to piss off a busker!)

We photocopied our manifesto onto hudereds of pieces of paper and folded it into little books which we placed around the uni- today High Wycombe, tomorrow the World! We basically wanted our manifesto to get out there and for people to read it…and it worked, my flatmate’s just come home and told me she picked one up.

‘Makeability Month’…Letterpress

As part of our ‘Makeability Month’ we had a workshop in Letterpress, (it was the first time I’ve ever done it) and it was awesome- definately something I would want to get more experienced with in the second year. I did pretty basic things but I think the outcome is so effective and the actual printing of it takes seconds, so once you’ve got everything set up you could do hundereds!

Firstly I found a few different variations of my letter ‘T’ which I put into a nice layout (I think!) and began my printing…

Letterpress 'T'

Then I used different characters to create emoticons. We were given some cool surfaces to print on…a luggage tag, receipt book pages and neon signs. These backgrounds really added to the pieces and helped them all to look a bit different.

Emoticons

(My favourite is the one on the orange heart with the little quiff…what a cutie!)

‘Makeability Month’

I’m reaching the end of the ‘Makeability Month’ where we spent a few weeks with second year Graphic Arts tutors pretty much just doing a few fun little projects. I’m usually mixed with Advertising students, so it’s been great to purely focus on Graphics and I’ve really enjoyed doing the work. Best month at uni yet, bring on next year!

At the start of our ‘Makeability Month’ we chose a letter at random out of a bag and I chose…’T'…hence all my outcomes are based around this letter.

3D Type

T(ea)bag & Cup

A T(ea) bag…this was hand sewn (no sewing machine at uni) and took FOREVER, but it was so relaxing sitting there sewing for ages and I think the outcome was worth it.

I also made other forms of 3D type using Tea related objects…visit my Flickr page to see more photos.

Logo

Chart Logo

A logo for the financial company ‘Chart’ (well, a fictional company made using the beginning of my name and the letter ‘T’).

I made this using graph paper and strips of coloured paper so although it looks simple is was bloody fiddly to make! Why cut out pieces of paper? Well, we began the day by looking at some of Chermayeff’s work, and apparently that’s all he used to design his logos. Seems like a pretty good technique and at least you won’t delete all your work if you press the wrong button!

Visit Chermayeff‘s website here.
